Best Places to Visit In Los Angeles For Free

My Favorite Places to Visit in Los Angeles for Free: A Personal Guide

Los Angeles

Los Angeles has always felt like a city of endless surprises. The first time I visited, I thought I’d need a huge budget to enjoy it. But I quickly discovered that some of the best places in LA don’t cost a thing. From stunning viewpoints to beachy escapes and iconic museums, I found myself falling in love with the city—without ever opening my wallet.

Whether you're visiting for the first time or just looking for budget-friendly ideas, here’s a personal list of my favorite places to visit in Los Angeles for free.

Griffith Observatory & Griffith Park

Griffith Observatory & Griffith Park

A Place Where the Sky Feels Closer

This was the very first place I visited in LA—and it still holds a special place in my heart. I remember walking up the trails in Griffith Park, surrounded by dry chaparral and wildflowers, until the Observatory came into view.

Inside, there are fascinating space exhibits and free public telescopes. But the real magic happens outside. I spent hours just sitting on the ledge, gazing at the Hollywood Sign on one side and the endless sprawl of LA on the other. If you’re a sunset chaser like me, trust me—this is the spot.

The Getty Center

An Artistic Place with a View

The Getty Center is more than just a museum—it's an experience. I took the tram ride up and instantly felt like I was in a movie. The architecture, the gardens, the clean white stone—everything felt surreal.

Inside, I wandered through halls of classical paintings and sculptures, completely free. Outside, I got lost in the gardens and ended up spending most of the afternoon just enjoying the view. It’s a peaceful, reflective place, and one of my top picks for anyone visiting LA on a budget.

Venice Beach & Venice Canals

A Place Where LA Shows Its Wild Side

Venice Beach was something else. I remember the drum circles, the roller skaters, the street performers—it was like a living, breathing art show. The boardwalk has this quirky energy that makes it impossible not to smile.

But just a few blocks away, I stumbled upon the Venice Canals. It felt like I had entered a different world—a quiet, charming place with cute bridges, ducks, and flower-lined walkways. It was the perfect break from the buzz of the beach.

Santa Monica Pier and Beach

Santa Monica Pier and Beach

A Place Full of Classic California Charm

Santa Monica Pier gave me those classic California vibes I’d always dreamed of. While the rides and food stalls were tempting, I stuck to the boardwalk and beach—both totally free and completely worth it.

I remember watching a local band play while kids danced in the sand. I walked along the beach until the sun dipped below the horizon, casting orange and pink across the sky. It was one of those moments where you feel completely present. This is the kind of place where memories are made.

The Broad Museum

A Place That Feels Bold and Modern

Downtown LA’s The Broad Museum was a spontaneous find. I didn’t even plan to go but saw the striking white honeycomb-like exterior and decided to walk in. Best decision ever.

I was blown away by the modern art inside—from giant balloon animals to thought-provoking installations. It’s free to enter, though you’ll want to reserve ahead if you can. This is the place where LA’s edgy, creative soul shines through.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

A Tourist Place That’s Still Worth It

Okay, I’ll admit—I thought the Walk of Fame would be overrated. But there’s something kind of magical about spotting your favorite actor’s name under your feet. I spent about an hour wandering Hollywood Boulevard, spotting stars and soaking in the chaos.

It’s a fun place to people-watch and snap a few iconic photos. While you’re there, peek at the handprints in front of the TCL Chinese Theatre and look up at the Hollywood Sign. It’s free, it’s famous, and it’s a little cheesy—but I loved it.

El Matador State Beach

A Place That Feels Like a Hidden Paradise

If you're up for a bit of a drive up the Pacific Coast Highway, El Matador State Beach in Malibu is worth it. I went early in the morning, and it felt like I had the whole place to myself.

The rock formations, sea caves, and crashing waves made it feel like I was somewhere far more exotic. I brought snacks, a journal, and a towel and just was. It’s a romantic, serene escape from the city—and it’s completely free if you find street parking.

Downtown LA's Historic Core & Arts District

A Place Full of Creative Energy

Wandering around downtown LA was like opening a treasure chest. The Bradbury Building was a highlight—the ironwork and skylights are stunning. I stumbled into The Last Bookstore, which might just be the most Instagrammable bookshop on Earth.

Later, I walked through the Arts District, where murals cover every other wall. It’s the kind of place that inspires you to pick up a paintbrush—or at least snap 100 photos. Many of the galleries were open to the public, and I even scored a free cold brew at one art opening.

Final Thoughts: You Don’t Need to Spend to Enjoy LA

What surprised me most about Los Angeles wasn’t just how much there was to do, but how much of it was free. From stargazing to sunset walks, from world-class museums to colorful street life, this city gives so much without asking for a single dollar in return.

If you’re planning a trip to LA or just want to explore more of your hometown, I highly recommend checking out these amazing places to visit in Los Angeles for free. Who knows—you might just fall in love with the city the way I did.
