In the Atlantic Ocean, far off the coast of Chile, there is an island known as Easter Island. This island has many secrets hidden within it and for hundreds of years experts have been searching to somehow gather this information about the history of this island.
The island is renowned for the thousands of giant statues on it. All around Easter Island, water is everywhere. There are many stories about the statues on the island, some say they were created by the humans who lived here.
While some believe that it is not a matter of human beings, they are created by aliens. In 1722, about 300 years ago, a European traveler Jacob Rogwin accidentally landed on this island. Jacob was surprised when he first saw the statues on the island, and his surprise turned to worry when he saw that the number of statues on the island numbered in the hundreds.
Looking at the statues, it seems as if a sculptor has carved them with great skill. The day Jacob accidentally landed on the island was Eastar Sunday. That is why this island was also named Easter Island.
At that time, there were still a few people living here, and they called the island as Rapa Nui The surprising thing is that even the people living on the island at that time did not know who made the sculptures on the island and when.
From this period, a series of experts came to this island, which continues until today. After many years of hard work, some evidences have been found on this island, which can be said that experts are very close to solving the puzzle of who made these sculptures on this island and which people lived here.
Easter Island is so isolated in the Atlan
tic Ocean that its neighboring island is about 2,75 km away, but there are human populations there.
Manger Ua Island with a population of 500 people is 2,600 km away from Easter Island. East Island is located in the sea limits of Chile and the coast of Chile is also at a distance of 3 thousand 512 km from here. Easter Island can only be reached from Chile by plane, which takes 5 hours to reach here.
Easter Island is about the size of a small city and has over a thousand statues, known as Maui. According to an estimate, these sculptures were made around the 13th century.
Some statues are in their original state, while others only have their faces visible. In 2012, when experts excavated here, it was found that the bodies of the statues whose faces are visible have actually been buried in the ground. Among these statues, the largest statue is about 33 feet high, and its weight is 90 thousand kg.
Experts also found a sculpture here that was left unfinished. Research has revealed that its length is around 70 feet and if completed, it will weigh around 300 tons. This is also the reason for the strange stories about Easter Island, that it seems inhumane to make such gigantic statues and then carry them to different places on the island.
Modern research has disproved all the stories about this island Because the experts have found many evidences that have proved that the statues on the island were made from the stones coming out of the volcano here. Experimentally, when an eye was tried to be carved out of stone, it took three days.
According to experts, looking at the statues on Alastair Island, it seems that 12 stone carvers would have taken about a year to make one statue. The experts had already understood how these sculptures would have been made.
But one question was still a challenge for them, how the stones around the volcano were carved and brought to the middle of the island?
Because one statue weighs about 14 elephants. Even in the present day, this work seems impossible without the help of a crane. After further inspection of the island, this puzzle is also solved. The team of experts noticed that some statues fell on their face and some on their feet.
This emphasized that they must have been moved from one place to another through ropes. As an experiment, a concrete sculpture was made and ropes were tied to it on three sides, and it was pulled in a specific manner. But the statue started moving forward.
In a study, it was said that 17,500 people lived on Easter Island at one time. These people came to this island 1700 years ago. Due to some natural calamity, the place became uninhabitable and due to lack of food, people started fighting among themselves.
A study also states that a civil war broke out here as a result of which thousands of people were killed, and the survivors migrated from here to other places.
It is certainly a fascinating and lingering mystery; it was so interesting reading this! Great post; I will have to do some more reading about these statues and the island they are a part of.
ReplyDeleteEaster Island sounds really interesting, any theory about it sounds very plausible, it reminds me of this disappearance of the Roanoke colony, and while most people believe that they traveled to Croatoan Island and/or assimilated with the indigenous people, we don't know for sure. I think that is part of the interest in mysteries like one on Easter Island, you have to wonder if you will ever really know what really happened.
